3. Brief History

Heybridge Boys FC was formed in the early Seventies. Unfortunately the earliest documented and minuted evidence of the Club available are dated during the 1980/1981 season when four teams played at a pitch in Langford (an even smaller village between Heybridge and Hatfield Peverel) on land behind the waterworks. Neither is there any evidence of when the Club chose it's traditional black and white striped kit. The records show that, since then, the Club gradually increased in team numbers and regularly won Leagues and Knock Out Cups. Back then most of the teams played in the Blackwater and Dengie League. Today we have a well established 'progression' with mini-soccer teams and the first year 11-a-side teams playing in the Blackwater and Dengie League and with most of the older teams playing in the much larger Colchester and District Youth League. Occasionally teams enter the Chelmsford and District League and many of our player's progress to playing at the highest level of youth soccer available in this area in the Eastern Alliance League under the Heybridge Swifts FC senior umbrella.

The Club's association with Ryman Premier League Heybridge Swifts FC began in the late Seventies but in 1982 the Club moved to its current permanent home (finally within the boundaries of Heybridge) at Scraley Road on land owned by the Swifts and directly behind their stadium. Despite sharing facilities and club colours both clubs are distinctly different and run independently of each other although, over the years, links between the two have grown to such an extent that the two work together for the benefit of the whole. Sometime after moving the Club moved it's original 'wooden shed' changing hut across the grounds to the site where the changing rooms are now. The hut was moved complete and intact using wooden posts as rollers and sheer brute strength!

On 2nd June 1991 the Club hut was burnt down in an arson attack. It seemed impossible to continue but in fact it became the turning point in the Club's history as local businesses, organisations and total strangers heard of the disaster and joined forces to help the Club build a new concrete hut. A Fun Day was held on the Plantation Hall field with a team of motorcycle stunt riders putting on a free show to attract crowds. This community spirit helped lift the Club and since then it has gone from strength to strength.

Over the years the facilities at the Club have improved through innovative fundraising schemes and the hardwork of all those members involved. The Club negotiated the use of the adjacent Heybridge School's field for two more pitches. The hut has been extended and now incorporates six separate changing rooms, toilets, a referee's room and a tea hut. The Club has improved the drainage and playability of its main pitch. It has installed semi-permanent floodlights to allow mid-week training in Winter. Most recently it has purchased and installed a container to store its goals and marking equipment. To match the improvement in facilities, performances on the field have increased to such a point where this year (2002) we have recorded one of our best ever seasons.

However Heybridge Boys FC is not just about success and building 'an empire' it's about giving the youth of the area, from as young as four to eighteen, a chance to play football with the maximum amount of encouragement in a safe environment using top quality equipment and with top quality local coaching. Every week we have fully qualified coaches from Heybridge Swifts actively involved in the Saturday morning sessions with the players. We have had some success in developing players most notably Jamie Pullen - a young keeper on the books at Ipswich Town and currently on full professional loan at Blackpool FC and Ronnie Bridges now in the first team at the Swifts and in the future we expect more.

Today the Club is ever progressive and is considered to be one of the best run and most popular in the area.

THE FUTURES BRIGHT IT'S BLACK AND WHITE!
