Ongar Juniors v/s Heybridge Boys

2-4 Heybridge win on penalties
Having had an appeal up held Heybridge traveled back to Love Lane for there County cup replay only to find the initial problem running the line for Ongar, undeterred Heybridge had a good warm up off the pitch and were in good spirits going into the game. Showing no nerves and brimming with confidence Heybridge walked into the lions den and immediately attacked the home goal giving a very good Ongar keeper plenty of work.
The Heybridge defences were also starting to get busy as Ongar began to put some good passing moves together. Heybridge worked hard as a team and kept their shape well winning the ball in mid field and pushing the ball through to Chris Johnson up front Heybridge began another attack, Chris was forced across the pitch towards the corner flag and it seemed there was no way out until he turned on the spot and put in a glorious cross ball towards the opposite wing which was met with an equally glorious header by Kieran Ansell who powered the ball into the net putting the visitors 1-0 up 14 minutes into the game much to the delight of the traveling support.
Ongar however weren’t about to roll over and pressed hard eventually drilling the ball into the Heybridge net through a crowded box after Heybridge failed to clear their lines. With the score at 1-1 extra time had to be played for the second time, after a quick break the game restarted and Heybridge responded in true style, we didn’t have to wait long for a goal with the Heybridge Captain Craig Martin laying the ball backwards to center forward Ricky Haines who met the ball full on rocketing the ball into the Ongar net.
As a tremendous game of football went on with both teams defending well and producing attack after attack it looked like Heybridge were going to be the victors but with just 40 seconds left on the clock Heybridge’s stand in keeper fumbled the ball and despite his best efforts and Rob Ward piling in behind Ongar managed to poke the ball over the line.
2-2 after extra time. The Ref called both teams to the centre circle in readiness for the final showdown, the penalty shoot out.
Craig Martin took his responsibility seriously as Captain and stepped up to bury the first penalty for Heybridge; Shane Brand then repaid his team mates for his earlier indiscretion by saving Ongar’s first shot. Terry Withers stepped up and scored from the spot as did Ongar’s next player, (Heybridge 2-1 up). Luke Roache scored for Heybridge and Ongar scored again (3-2) Ricky Haines shot was saved and Ongar had a life line but again Shane stood solid and saved for Heybridge, all that Heybridge had to do now was score 1 more penalty to win, up stepped Chris Johnson and without any hesitation banged the ball into the net sending the Heybridge Boys through to the next round.

HEYBRIDGE BOYS 11 HALSTEAD COLTS 1
Heybridge lined up in confident mood having previously beaten the Colts 6-2 away; however Halstead battled well and thwarted many attacks on the visitor’s goal before 23 minute’s into the game Heybridge’s Shane Brand volleyed the ball into the area and Phil Mennell headed into the net. Craig Martin and Chris Johnson then began to link up well in the middle of the park and a goal fest began at Scraley Rd Craig banged 2 goals in before Chris added a goal of his own. At 4-0 the game was brought to an abrupt halt as Heybridge’s strong left winger Phil Mennell had to be carried off the pitch with a suspected broken ankle.
With the game restarted Heybridge got straight back into their stride with Sam Wallis splitting the Halstead defence again and Chris Johnson picked up his second goal before the half time whistle. 5-0.
With Phil still being attended too off the pitch Heybridge started the second half slowly, then the on form Chris Johnson hooked on to another cross ball from Shane Brand and buried it with confidence sealing his hat-trick. 6-0. On 25 minutes Halstead Colts finally scored a conciliation goal through Josh Preston but Heybridge stamped their authority back on the game by banging in 2 more quick goals from Kieran Ansell and Chris Johnson. Heybridge piled on the pressure as Adam Brotherton banged over a corner kick and Terry Withers headed into the visitors net Craig then completed his hat-trick and Sam Wallis got his reward heading the ball home for the final goal of the game. 11-1.
